Hydronic Heating and Radiant Floor Basics

Hydronic heating, also known as radiant floor heating, circulates hot water through plastic tubing beneath your home’s flooring. Because hot air rises, this system can efficiently heat an entire home. It also keeps floors that would normally be cold to the touch warm in the winter.

Hydronic radiant floor heating systems are popular because they’re more energy-efficient than other home heating systems. However, like any heating method, hydronic heating systems may develop issues that require professional plumbing expertise.

How We Install Hydronic Heating Systems

When we install a hydronic heating system, we use one of two methods: wet or dry. Wet installation is a more permanent method of installation, while dry installation is more modular and easier to adjust after installation. Here’s a quick overview of how we carry out both installation methods:

  • Wet – Wet installation involves placing the plastic tubing directly into concrete. This method is called “wet” because it requires us to lay new concrete. Wet installation enables the bed of concrete to absorb and radiate heat evenly throughout the floor. Once installed, this system is extremely energy efficient, though it is difficult to repair if there is a leak.
  • Dry – Dry installation uses a system of prebuilt panels with slots for the radiant tubing. During this installation, we’ll remove your existing flooring, lay out the panels across the room, and then slot the tubing into the proper place. Because the flooring goes directly on top of the pipe tracks, dry installation often requires carefully placed insulation and reflectors to efficiently direct heat.

Like any service from All-Plumb-Rooter Plumbing, our hydronic heating system installations are backed by the All-Plumb-Rooter Well Done Promise. If you experience any issues with your radiant floor system after installation, give us a call, and we’ll come back and make it right.

Common Hydronic Heating Issues

A broken hydronic heating system doesn’t benefit you in the least. When this system breaks down, all you’re left with is a series of pipes that can’t heat your home.

Several issues may lead to performance troubles in radiant floor heating systems. Some of the most common problems include:

  • Pipe leaks: Leaks prevent hot water from circulating effectively. Without proper preventative maintenance, pipe leaks can cause serious damage.
  • Pipe freeze: Power and heat loss can lead to a freeze-up. When left unaddressed, frozen pipes can burst.
  • Air lock: Because the boiler system is pressurized, air bubbles occasionally develop inside the pipes, blocking the flow of hot water.

Hydronic Heating Repair FAQs

Is hydronic heating more efficient than central heating?

Hydronic heating has the potential to be more efficient than central heating. This can lead to significant cost savings on your monthly electrical or gas bill.

Radiant floor heating works a bit like a water heater. Boilers heat and store water and then pump it through your home when the temperature drops below a set threshold. Heating the water and circulating it through the hydronic heating system are the main drivers of energy usage.

On the other hand, central heating involves fans and blowers in addition to a heating element. Unlike a hydronic heating system, the heating element must be activated whenever the fans are on, while a boiler doesn’t need to be active when the water is moving through the system

The differences in energy use make hydronic heating systems more efficient than central heating. Over time, this can save you money on your electric and gas bills. It also has positive environmental impacts.
